During the winter in early 2023, I took a 5-week trip to Croatia with my little chihuahua, Thunder. We rented a manual-shift car and roamed all over the country, with Dubrovnik being one of our last stops.
Of course, prior to the trip, I did my research and came up with a general itinerary. In learning more about Croatia, I quickly discovered that Split and Dubrovnik are the most commonly visited cities as each one provides spectacular views and its own unique historical tale.
I don’t know about you, but when I travel, I like to find the off-the-beaten-path places. The places that don’t make the “top 10” lists. The places that will have me coming home with pictures and stories that others wouldn’t have due to their typical itineraries. These are absolutely the places that I go to.
But Dubrovnik isn’t one of those.
Although Dubrovnik is a very, VERY popular place to visit, I had to put it on my itinerary nonetheless! I HAD to see the famous Walls of Dubrovnik and walk them. Just like I had to go to Split and see Diocletian’s Palace and the substructures underneath it. Plus, I love Game of Thrones, and both Split and Dubrovnik were filming grounds for that excellent series.
Being the winter months, when the tourist season is almost non-existent, I was so lucky to enjoy my walk along the wall almost totally alone. (I did bring my dog with me!) There was practically no one else on that wall, and I enjoyed a leisurely, slow stroll for hours and hours with barely encountering another soul.
But there was this one person...
Towards the end of my walk, I met another female solo traveler, Casey. She was from Pennsylvania, she’s a digital nomad, and she had been on the worldly road for a year and half by the time we met!
As it turned out, she became my emboldener when it came to flying my drone. You see, the whole time I had been roaming Croatia, I would pop my drone up in the air and hope and pray I don’t crash it or lose it or get yelled at for using it! As Dubrovnik is a residential area as well as a tourist destination, I felt weary about flying my drone there….by myself.
I talked Casey into letting me treat her to lunch the following day, yet she had no idea that I had planned on bringing my drone with me. After we enjoyed the most delicious meal, she showed me a secret little spot that only locals know how to get to, which was right out on the rocks outside the walls with the Adriatic Sea right at our toes.
It was a perfect spot for a home point for my drone. With her emboldening me, and with my excitement to be in this secret spot, I flew my best flight ever.
Enjoy the videos!
